The Netflix top 10 are now in for the week of February 13-19.
Starting with the TV side of things You season 4 stayed on top in its second week with over 64 million hours viewed. I assume that it will occupy the top 10 for a while as part 2 numbers will combine with part 1 which means the numbers could get a lot bigger. As season 4 debuted everyone went back to the past seasons as well as all of the last seasons are now in the top 10.
Now the rest of the top 10 is noting major. Their new reality show Perfect Match debuted at number 2 with over 24 million hours minutes watched. As this was their star studded reality show I expected they wanted stronger numbers but we shall see how it fares in its coming weeks.
Moving onto the film side of things, Your Place Or Mine stayed at number 1 but actually went up in viewership by reaching over 53 million minutes viewed. This shows that on the streaming side of things stars do still have a lot of power in getting audiences to watch content.
The rest of the chart was quite small, however The Woman King did debut on the service and managed to come in third with just over 12 million minutes watched. Hopefully more people watch it now it’s on Netflix as it’s an incredible film with outstanding performances.
That’s it for this week. What did you watch and what do you plan on watching?
The Last Of Us EP6 has arrived and a lot happened this episode, even though this was less then an hour.
This week we finally got the reunion between Tom and Joel and was introduced to the towns of Jackson and their leader Maria. Gabriel Luna plays Tommy here in the show and he does an absolutely fantastic job at embodying the character, he even sounds just like Tommy from the games. I loved going in depth on Joels and Tommys relationship and seeing how Tommy was trying to move on from their past compared to Joel who finds it very hard to let go of.
It was also great to see how well Jackson had translated into live action. This town wasn’t in the first game, but is where we pick up at the beginning of season 2. Also a nice tease for season 2 was when Elle shouted at one of the kids to stop staring at her. That charter looked identical to Dina, who is Ellie girlfriend in Part 2. There was no clear confirmation that it was Dina but i have a hard time believing it isn’t after how they styled her.
This episode also brought that famous argument from the games to the show where Ellie feels like Joel is abandoning her because she reminds him too much of his daughter. This really highlighted the chemistry that Pedro and Bella have with each other and shows the bond they have developed over this past season. I like how here as well Joel ended up giving Ellie a choice of who she wanted to go with and without even thinking picking Joel.
Near the end we got a sort of montage of them travelling together and it just shows the bond they have both formed and how comfortable they are with each other now. This episode ended with them exploring the university, which i must say was much harder in the game as it was full of the dead. However here they did just skate right through it. Although Joel still got injured by protecting Ellie which shows how much he now cares for her. It was also very emotional to see how Ellie needed Joel to be okay at the end as he passed out.
What did you think of this weeks episode and are you excited for episode 7?
The box office for this past weekend is here and we have a lot to discuss.
AntMan and The Wasp Quantumania opened this past weekend to mixed reviews but still managed to open to a franchise high by opening to £104 million domestically. This clearly shows the power of the Marvel fandom as films with these reviews don’t open this highly. This is lower compared to other Marvel films however the AntMan franchise has always had a much smaller box office compared to other MCU films. The key with this film will be how it holds in its second weekend to see how fans and audiences really feel about this entry in the MCU.
This is also a good weekend for James Cameron as Avatar The Way of Water managed to surpass Titanc to become the third biggest film of all time. The film has now passed $2.24 billion worldwide. I think its safe to say that even the die hard Avatar fans never expected that the sequel would end up this high. It is now most likely to stay at this position now and it will be interesting to see how it performs on streaming.
These are the biggest story’s from this weeks box office. What did you see and are you going to see Quantumania again.
The highly anticipated AntMan and The Wasp: Quantumania has arrived and has revived a low reception from critics but a more positive reaction from fans. Here i am going to discuss what I though about the film overall.
Kevin Feige promised that this film would start to bring the overall story of the new saga into focus and it did just that. In this film we get introduced to Kang, who is set to be the big bad through this saga. We first saw a version of him in Loki season 1 where he warmed that there were a lot of versions of him that wanted to destroy the multiverse. Jonathon Majors does an absolutely fantastic job at showing why Kang is such a threat to the MCU. His performance is one of the best seen in the MCU yet, he brings a lot of gravitas to the role and instead of making him silly makes him very menacing and sting minded. Kang is by far the best part of this film and I’m very excited to see a lot more of him in the future.
Another character that made a really strong impact this film was Janet played by the one and Michelle Pfieiffer. Her scenes in this movie are absolutely phenomenal I was completely hooked to the screen and it made me wish we had scene more of her in action as the wasp because her actions scenes are all great as well.
Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lily both do great jobs here, but both do get overshadowed by others in the cast. One thing that hurts Paul Rudd here in particular is that as they made this a much more serious film he doesn’t get to shine where he does best and that’s in the comedic side of things. Also as much as I love Kathryn Newton and what she did with the role of Cassie here I do feel that she took screen time away from The Wasp as it felt she was the female lead here instead of her.
However one thing this film succeeds very well in is that it does great World building for the MCU. This film shows that even 31 films in there is still a lot unknown about the universe. This is as it showed a whole Universe and ecosystem down in the quantum realm and it was interesting to see how Kang had turned it into his own kingdom.
Moving into the VFX of this film. A lot of the environments are brought to life quite well and a lot of the time the environment of the quantum realm feel real. However the big VFX issue in the film came with MODOK. I feel for the VFX team because I don’t know how you bring that character to live action but they defiantly didn’t master that with this film. His face always looked just off and it was like you were looking at some wired unfinished VFX work.
My biggest problems with the film get at the end of the film. My first problem was that it felt like with this AntMan film they wanted to go in a bit more of a series direction then the previous films. They did succeed this through most if this by having Kang here. However having Kang being drafted by an army of ants just felt a bit too much over the top for me and just didn’t gel with the rest of the film. I also think the film would of had more impact if both Scott and Hope were stranded in the quantum realm at the end. This would of added some much needed consequences to this film as it would of shown them sacrificing themselves to stop a Kang.
Overall, AntMan and The Wasp: Quantumania is nowhere near as bad as critics are making it out to be. It’s a fun and important step forward in the MCU, so even though the story isn’t the strongest I would give this one a watch.
The Netflix top 10 is here for the week of February 6-12.
Starting with the TV side of things, the highly anticipated You Season 4 Part 1 debuted in the service. It shot to the top with over 93 million hours watched in its first few days. Now at first look this look smaller to other big series debuts but as the series consisted of only five episodes all under 1 hour this is a big hit for the service. As season 4 premiered both season 1 and 3 also popped into the top 10 with audience rewatching the past seasons.
Both Ginny and Georgia and Wednesday are still both going very strong on the service with them coming in second and third respectively. Hi wee Locke and Co fell from number 1 last week all the way to number 7 with just 15 million hours watched. It has never had super strong numbers but has been praised highly from critics and audiences alike. As it’s a UK original it doesn’t need the same viewership as a US show so there is still a chance it could get renewed for a season 2.
Now moving over to the film area. Your Place or Mine debuted in the streamer with a solid debut of over 51 million hours watched. This shows the classic Rom coms are still alive and if you put big enough stars in them people will watch. own the rest of the top 10 isn’t pretty as it has quite low viewership, showing once again that Netflix’s true strength is its shows.
That’s it for this week, what did you watch and what do you plan on watching?
The first part to You Season 4 has released and is quite different to the past seasons.
Part 1 starts with Joe now working as a university teacher as he is trying to live a better life until he is dragged into a murder when another teacher ends up dead in his apartment. This season feels very different from the ones that have come before. The main reason is the fact that Joe is no longer the problem instead he is being used by someone else who has figured out his past.
This season takes place in London as Joe is on the run from Loves family as they want him dead after he killed her at the end of the previous season. It’s fun to watch Joe try to fit in with the English crowd, however at points it does feel like the waiters just looked up British stereotypes and threw them in there.
We also get introduced to a lot of new characters that are part of this inner circle that are being targeted and killed. The two standouts for me are Kate(Charlotte Ritchie) and Lady Phoebe(Tilly Keeper). Kate is set up to be the new woman Joe falls for this season, however she has a few secrets of her own and it takes her a long time to warm to Joe. She is a very different character for Joe to fall for then in the past. However, at points it felt like they were trying to replicate the early dynamics of Joe and Love and nothing stands up to the incredible job victoria pedretti did in that role. Being from the UK Tilly Keeper is quite well known as a character from a popular soap Eastenders, where she played a very different role. It was very nice seeing her here playing such a different role and smashing it out of the park. At first her character seems quite flat but as the episodes go on we get to learn more about her.
A character that is separate from the rich inner circle is Amy-Leigh Hickmans character of Nadia. She is one of Joes students and he takes a soft spot for her and feels a responsibility to look over her. The creators did reveal that they wanted Jenna Ortega to return this season as Ellie and i have a feeling the character of Nadia was brought in after she couldn’t do it. This is as it feels very similar to the relationship Joe had with Ellie in season 2 and i could easily see Ellie fitting in there as a student.
Speaking of Love, I do feel that killing her off last season was a bad idea. This is as when watching i did keep hoping that maybe she would just turn up for revenge on Joe, and i still have those hopes for part 2. Victoria Pedretti brought a lot to the show and it feels like something is missing without her here. In her two season of the show she came just as important as Joe so the show does take a bit of a hit without her.
Overall, this season so far doesn’t reach the heights that it did in season 2 and 3, but it is still a lot of fun as Penn Badgley is perfect in this role and seeing the tables turn on him here is a great way to keep this season fresh. The show is still as addictive as ever and every episodes makes you want more. I am very excited to see how it all wraps up in part 2?
What did you think of You season 4 part 1 and will you be tuning in to watch Part 2 in March?
The Last Of Us Episode 5 has released early this week due to the Super Bowl and what an Epsiode we got.
At the end of the previous Episode we got a tease at Henry and Sam and here we got them in full force. One of the big changes from the game is that they decided to make Sam dead here. This was a brilliant addition as it helped show in more depth how Sam basically needed Henry to survive and how that put more pressure on Henry to keep them safe.
The Ellie and Sam relationship was just as compelling here in the show as it was in the games. I love how she tried learning ASL so she could better communicate with him. It also allowed her to be a child, even if it was just for a moment she was able to feel what it was like to be a normal kid. They also managed to make Sams death even more heartbreaking here as Ellie tried to save him by giving him some of her blood. This was honestly so heartbreaking as it made her realise that she could be the last person alive and that without the cure she could be all alone, which is her greatest fear.
This Episode also demonstrated how much Joel has come to care for Ellie. The first instance of this is how determined he was to protect her when the herd of zombies broke out and you could see on his face how sacred he was that he could potentially loose her. You also saw the realisation on his face at the end when he was over Henry’s and Sam’s grave and could resonate with Henry’s need to protect Sam.
Now with the emotional stuff out of the way, let’s talk about the big action scene near the end. Similar to the game Joel has to sneak into the house and take out the sniper. However here Kathleen tracks them down in an attempt to kill Sam and Henry, but then the dead swarm from the ground attacking everyone. This is by far the best action sequence so far in the show and demonstrated the ferocity of the infected and why humanity fell so fast to them. This helped to reinforce to the audience why they are so dangerous as they took at a whole army in a few minutes. As I have played a game there are a few key action scenes in the game that I can’t wait to see after that.
What did you think of this episode of The Last Of Us and are you excited for the next episode?
In Disneys Q1 2023 report Bob Iger was talking about the future of the company and announced that Disney has several sequel in the works for its popular animated films.
A sequel to Zootopia was discussed not long after the first one came out and made over a billion dollars at the box office. However since then a sequel to the hit has not been talked about. There was some focus in the brand as a series of shirts were released last year on Disney Plus. With news of a sequel in development it’s most likely we will learn more at D23.
Another film Bob Iger announced a sequel for was Frozen. The first Frozen became a worldwide phenomenon and the second film also did spectacular Business by making over one billion dollars. It was heavily speculated that a third frozen film would be in the works due to the popularity of the brand and after todays call we now know it’s in development.
Finally the last film sequel announced was for Toy Story. Last year Pixar tried spinning off from the main franchise with Lightyear however that didn’t pan out as it was met with mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office. Toy Story is Pixar’s main franchise however it will be interesting to see how Toy Story 5 works with how Toy Story 4 ended. The biggest question for this film will be if Woody will be a part of it after he left the rest of the gang at the end of Toy Story 4.
Are you excited for these animated sequels and which one are you most excited for?
The Netflix ratings are here for the week of January 30- February 5.
Starting with TV shows, Ginny and Georgia season 2 has managed to squeeze into their top 10 English language shows of all time with 504.77 million hours watched. Season 2 has really blown up on the service with the release of season 2 as in its fifth week it’s still at number 2 with over 38 million hours watched with season 1 at 4th place with over 22 million hours watched. Expect a renewal announcement soon as the show runners teased they have season 3 and 4 mapped out.
Now with the rest of the shows, in its second week on the service Lockwood and Co climbed to number 1. However it is a very tight race with Ginny and Georgia season 2 as it has just over 39 million hours watched. Depending on how it holds up in the coming weeks will affect whether it gets a season 2 or not.
Wednesday also still going strong coming in third with over 28 million hours watched. New seasons of New Amsterdam has been added to the service and they are all doing very well on the service, which shows how Netflix allows people to discover shows that you haven’t watched.
Moving onto films, You People stayed at number 1 and went up with views with over 65 million hours watched. Pamala Anderson’s documentary debuted with soft numbers at number 2 with just over 24 million hours viewed. Minions the rise of Gru came in third after it debuted in the service this past week, while Glass Onion is still in the top 10 at number 7.
That is the Netflix ratings for this week. What did you watch and what are you planning to watch?
Episode 4 of The Last Of Us is now here and this show just gets better and better. It manages to take great moments from the game and develop them to make them more complex and adds more depth for TV.
This episode focused a lot on the blossoming relationship between Joel and Ellie. Joel finally started seeing Ellie more as a person over just cargo. They boned this episode after Joel realised he couldn’t protect Ellie from having to use a gun and realised that he couldn’t keep treating her like a normal child. They also brought in Ellie’s pun book from the game which just made this episode feel a lot more fun, especially compared to the last episode. It’s going to be a lot of fun seeing their dynamic evolve over the next few eps especially now seeing they are quite close.
Another aspect that I want to discuss about this episode is how they turned these villains from the game who were just obstacles and added characters and a voice to them. This is something this show excels at as it takes great moments from the game and enhances it to fit television. It will be interesting to see how Henry and Sam fit into this new strong they have developed for the show.
The visuals in this show also continue to impress. When they show Joel and Ellie driving at the beginning the visuals of how the wold broke down is just absolutely stunning. Speaking of that scene they included the one scene from the game that a lot of people had been hoping for. Ellie finding Bills magazine in the truck is just as funny in the show as it is in the game. Bella Ramsey showed this episode how funny she could be and continues to show why she is the perfect casting for Ellie.
What did you think of The Last Of Us Episode 4 and are you excited for next week?
