The latest episode of The Mandalorian was a very different type of episode then usual, mainly because there was very little Mando. This episode actually felt very much like an Andor episode due to it being a lot about the New Republic and being set on .Coruscant
This episode started with a thrilling space chase, which is something this show dies especially well. This resulted in Bo Katans castle being destroyed meaning she now has to stick with Mando as she has no where else to go.
The episode then changes its focus on Dr Pershing who used to work for a off Gideon but is now on Couresent working for the New Republic. It was very cool seeing Coruscant thrive after the fall of the Empire and seeing the people juts enjoy life without the fear of war. It was charming to see more of Coruscant outside all of the government buildings.
This episode focused on Dr Pershing and Katy M Obrians Comm Officer retrieving a device from an imperial ship that helps with the Drs work of cloning. I think this is the main take way from this episode as Cloning is a big part of the Star Wars Universe at the moment, with it being a key focus on the Bad Batch Season 2. Don’t be surprised if the main story shifts to cloning and that Grogu has something to do with it. Even though Jon Favreau has stated that Grogu isn’t a clone I think that is just to throw us off as it’s looking more and more likely that he is in fact a clone of Yoda.
The episode ended with Mando and Bo returning to the rest of the Mandalorians to show that Din has been redeemed. However as Bo saved Din she has also been redeemed and welcomed into the coven. I think she is going to use this as an opportunity to take lead of this coven and use them to reclaim Mandalore for herself.
What did you think of this weeks episode and do you think Grogu is a clone of Yoda?
The Netflix charts for the week of March 6-12 are here.
This past week You Season 4 Part 2 debuted and shot back to number 1 on the charts. Part 2 was a much better improvement over Part 1 however, I think with the mixed reception to part 1 this season would have done much better in the ratings if it had dropped all at once. Penn Badgely even recently confirmed that it wasn’t made to be split into two parts.
The MH370 Documentary is also doing quite strong business for a documentary on Netflix. They usually only do documentaries as films but due to its strong performance you may see more series docs instead. Also in its second week sex/Life Season 2 went up but still doesn’t have super strong numbers so a season 3 isn’t guaranteed.
Outer banks season 3 is still pulling in good numbers with all of its seasons in the top 10 and we know a season 4 is on the way. Chris Rock also had his lives special debut however it hasn’t been a big win for the service and has also been quite controversial.
Now moving over to films, Luther The Fallen Sun debuted with strong numbers and shows that there is potential with this franchise. Also The Hunger games shows that its still a pourer franchise with 2 of the films entering the top 10. This is good news for Lionsgate who have a prequel set to release later this year.
That’s it for the Netflix charts this week, what did you watch on a Netflix this past week?
Scream 6 has arrived in theatres and there is a lot to talk about. This review will obtain spoilers for the film.
Scream 6 opened with a bang. Samara Weaving did a fantastic job at being the opening girl. This opening scene was all about twists and surprises as it started with her being on a date and then meeting him in an ally. When she is killed by Ghostface you expect the titles to come up however, Ghostface takes off his mask and it’s revealed to be Tony Revolori. I was very shocked as i wondered what they were doing revealing Ghostface at the beginning but it was very cool seeing that it was a fake out and he wasn’t the main Ghostface of the film.
This film moved away from the original cast and it paid off very well for them. This film focuses heavily on the core four which was established in scream 5. This was an excellent idea as it made the franchise feel fresh as after five films focused on the original trio, however the inclusion of Gale did ensure that it didn’t forget the past all together.
Gales apartment scenes was one of the best scenes in the movie. I couldn’t believe that Gale had never had a phone call with Ghostface and that was nice to see. It was also cool seeing Courtney Cox hold her own against Ghostface and how he used the guilt of Deweys death against her. I was even convinced that they had actually killed Gale, however that was luckily a fake out. It makes sense for Gale to still be in this franchises as she is a reporter and rose to fame due to the Ghostface killings so having her come back here makes sense.
Another fan favourite also returned this time around and that was in the form of Hayden Panettieres Kirby. Kirby was absolutely fantastic in this form. She held her own against Ghostface and it was quite emotional seeing her reaction to Jills cloths in the Ghostface memorial as they were best friends. As she is an FBI agent i would hop she would return in future instalments of the franchise to help fight Ghostface.
Talking about the past this film is heavily linked to the past films. The Ghostface here as a shrine dedicated to all of the ones of the past and is leaving their masks when he kills. The kills in this film are extremely violent, however i was questions how certain people lived after getting stabbed about 100 times.
Melissa Barrera stole this film for me with an incredible performance. Sam really goes through the ringer in this film as there is a conspiracy going around that she is the real killer and she has to wrestle with still seeing visions of her dead farther. Moving the franchise to focus on her is great because her character isn’t as black and white as Sydney was. This is as Sam does have a part of her farther in her and she does enjoy killing. It was very thrilling seeing Sam at the end in the Ghostface costume and made me wonder that in a few films times she could be the Ghostface.
Speaking of Ghostface i enjoyed having it be three different pole as i was thrown off many times on who i thought it could be. I did have a feeling from that start that Ethan would have been one of the killers as they tried too hard to make it seem that he wasn’t the killer. However i was very shocked to find out it was also Quinn and Detective Bailey as i never saw that coming at all. They even had me convinced for a bit that Kirby was the actual killer. I also didn’t see the twist coming where they ended up being related to Richie(the Ghostface from Scream 5) and this gave them a good motive to want to come after Sam and Tara.
The film ended with Sam looking at her farther Ghostface mask, which could be foreshadowing her turn to become just like her farther in the future. However i wouldn’t want that turn to be straight away as it would be cool to see her evolution from hero to villain.
Overall, i really enjoyed Scream 6 and it is defiantly the best since the original. The whole cast kill it and I’m excited to see where the franchise goes in Scream 7.
The Last Of Us finale aired and how perfect it was. It was ripped straight from the game while also adding extra elements to make it more emotional.
This episode started off with a flashback to Ellie’s birth and we got to see Ellie’s mom, who is played by the Ellie from the game Ashley Johnson. She does an absolutely phenomenal job here with the little screen time she has and it shows where Ellie gets her strength from because her mom is really strong. We find out that Anne is bit when giving birth to Ellie in a really emotional scene. This opening also allows us to see the bind Marlene has with Ellie as she really has been with her since birth, which makes the ending of this episode even more emotional.
Another element they added this episode which I don’t remember being in the game is where Joel tells Ellie he tried to kill himself after his daughter died. This is an important emotional thread as it links to the end the episode where Joel says just because things look bleak at the time doesn’t mean they can’t get better. In his case obviously referring to finding Ellie and the relationship they have made over this season.
The rest of the episode felt like it was ripped straight out of the game. One of my favourite moments was the part when Ellie finds the Giraffe and Joel is running after her trying to keep up. The whole scene with them feeding the Giraffe together just shows how far they have come since the beginning and how much they truly do care about each other.
Speaking about how much Joel cares for Ellie, the hospital scenes were absolutely brutal. Joel knew he couldn’t lose Ellie even if it meant dooming the rest of the world. We finally got to see the really dark side of Joel which he has talked about in the past. He went through that hospital killing everyone in his path, even when they tried surrendering to him. This showed Joel was willing to go to any length to protect Ellie, and we all know that will come back to bite him in season 2.
The one criticism i had with the hospital sequence was that i feel it could of been longer and more violent. This is as in the game there are countless enemies that come at you from all angles, where as in the show there weren’t that many considering the operation that the fireflies had there.
However i loved the last conversation between Marlene and Joel as Marlene is willing to let Ellie wake up because she knows that Ellie would sacrifice herself for a cure. However Joel refuses to let that’d happen and kills Marlene to make sure she can’t come and find Ellie. This felt more emotional then in the game because we saw at the beginning of this episode how Marlene has been with Ellie since she was born and how close she was with her mom.
The ending scene was also perfect as it was just out of the game as Ellie asked Joel to swear to her that’s he wasn’t lying to her abut the firefly’s and he did. This sets up season 2 perfectly as we all know what’s about to go down.
Overall, this episode was phenomenal and I’m ready to bring on the chaos in season 2.
You Season 4 Part 2 is here and is nothing like you expected. After a soft start to the season with part 1, part 2 goes in all the way with amazing twists and turns that you never see coming anod we finally see the real Joe Goldberg.
Starting with one of the biggest twists this season. Joe Goldberg was the killer all along. They did a very good job at making us feel that Joe was finally on the track to being redeemed but it seems it was all a lie. It turns out that Joe was just hallucinating the whole time and was in fact the killer. I feel that this finally showed us the true side of Joe and that by the end of the series he has accepted it and knows that he will always be this killer.
It was also shocking to see that Joe had actually kidnapped Marianne and had her locked in the cage the whole time but he did remember. I also loved the fact that she and Nadia actually managed to outplay Joe and free her from him without him ever knowing. I wouldn’t be surprised if Marianne helps to bring Joe down next season if it is indeed the last one.
Speaking of Nadia her ending was absolutely heartbreaking. She was so close to getting evidence on Joe but her caught her and in his own twisted way saved her as he framed her for the murder of her boyfriend Ethan. This was the true Joe as he had accepted that he was a killer and wasn’t avoiding that side to him anymore. Amy Leigh Hickman did such a good job as Nadia I would love to see her again in the future.
Speaking of actors who did good jobs I think the person who owned this season was Tilly Keeper who played Lady Phoebe. She did an outstanding job with her character this season and I love that she ended up doing what she wanted to do and survived the wrath of Joe.
I must hand it to Penn Badgley for his acting in this part as he did a fantastic job at balancing the Joe trying to redeem himself and the true psychopath version of Joe. If I was Netflix I would push for him to get nominated for an Emmy for his performance that’s how good he was.
One thing I was disappointed by was the fact that yes Love Quinn was just a hallucination. I do feel that scene was added to the trailer to make sure people watched part 2 who didn’t enjoy part 1 as much. I think for a season 5, which I highly assume they will do, they need to find a way to bring Love back full time because the show just doesn’t feel the same without her. There are several rumours that season 5 would be the last season and it would be very interesting to end the show with a Joe vs Love situation, where she finally tries to get him caught after everything he has done.
Overall, You Season 4 had a slower start with part 1, but part 2 really supersized it. However I would make season 5 the final one as I’m not sure where else this show can go and I would defiantly bring Love back as the show just isn’t the same without her.
The Nielsen charts for the week of January 30- February 5 are here and there is a lot to discuss.
This was a the week Black Panther Wakanda Forever premiered on Disney Plus and it shot to the top of the overall charts. It premiered with over 2 billion minutes watched. This just shows the popularity of the MCU despite recent hiccups and maybe shows that a significant amount of the audience are choosing to wait to watch these movies on Disney Plus, instead of going to the theatre to see them. It will be very interesting to see how AntMan and The Wasp Quantumania performs on the service and to see if people who didn’t go to the theatre still decide to watch it on Disney Plus.
On the original charts Ginny and Georgia are still raining supreme. Netflix needs to hurry up and renew it already as it is clearly a hot show. However just behind it is Peacocks Poker Face. This really is a hit for the service and helping to put it on the map. Poker Face has already been renewed for a season 2 and it will be interesting to see if this shows popularity boosts any of Peacocks other original shows.
The power of streaming is shown this week on the acquired chart. You have New Amsterdam take the top spot with its four seasons spread across Netflix and Peacock. This show started with great ratings on NBC but then went down dramatically over the years. It is interesting to see shows get a big bump from streaming, similar to what happened with Manifest. However New Amsterdam wont be saved as they wrapped up that show.
Zombies also seem to be the king as The Last Of Us and The Walking Dead take second and third place on the chart. The Last Of Us has been a massive hit for HBO and is right up there with the Game Of Thrones franchise. Also The Walking Dead being this high again clearly shows why AMC aren’t willing to let it go as people are still watching that final season on Netflix.
That’s it for this weeks Nielsen charts. What did you watch?
Finally after waiting what feels like forever season 3 of The Mandalorian is here. The premier did a very good job at setting up the overall story for the season, while also giving us some great moments between Mando and Grogu.
The first thing I want to talk about is the action scenes this episode as there was a few. Rick Famuyiwa did an absolute fantastic job at directing these action scenes this episode. I liked the opening one where it was a clan of Mandalorians fighting the big sea creature, not only was it exciting to watch but it showed you an insight into how they operate together as a group. My favourite action scene was the ending space battle as it just felt like classic Star Wars, with ships flying in and out of asteroids, it just managed to capture the perfect Star Wars feeling.
This episode was about setting up the premise of what we are going to see in season 3 and it’s all about redemption for Din after he took his helmet off. I also think they are setting up some sort of fight between Bo Katan and Mando as after that final scene there seems to be even more tension between them. It will be interesting to see how the story unravels and see what happens with the Darksaber.
Now probably my favourite moments of this episode was just the interactions between Mando and Grogu. Even though Mando has a helmet on you can just feel how much he cares for Grogu. One of the scenes I loved in particular was when Grogu came down into the cockpit to be held by Mando while he was sleeping. I also like seeing Grogu more confident and powerful with the force. I thought it was hilarious when he was just spinning himself around in the chair and suing the force to get food. Jon Favro ha stated that Grogu was with Luke for 2 years so has learnt quite a lot about the force. I hope this means that we can expect a good action scene in the future with Grogu using the force.
Another aspect I would like to touch on is the visuals and the set design. I thought this episode in particular looked just like a set from the original trilogy and brought back that classic Star Wars feeling. I also loved seeing a Loews of different and unique Alien designs, especially the Captain at the end of the episode who looked very unique.
Overall, I really enjoyed this first episode and am excited to see where this season goes. What did you think of the premier and what are you looking forward to see going into future episodes.
The Netflix top 10 charts are here for the week of February 20-26.
OuterBanks Season 3 finally debuted on the service and exploded. In its first few days it shot to number 1 with over 154 million hours watched. Netflix Slavery knows the popularity of the series as they have already renewed the show for a season 4 and with how season 3 needed I’m glad they did. The first 2 seasons also made it into the top 10 with people rewatching for the new one. It will be interesting to see how it’s numbers hold and to see if it can make it into Netflix’s Top 10 of all time.
Both Crime documentaries and reality shows have also proved good business for Netflix as both hold the number 2 and 3 positions. You Season 4 Part 1 is still holding strong with Part 2 due out next week, expect another surge in that viewership.
Now moving onto the film side, where the numbers are less impressive. It seems that everyone decided to binge OuterBanks this past weekend as We have a Ghost premiered with soft numbers for the service with just over 40 million hours watched. This isn’t a great debut considering the cast, however we will see how it holds in its second week before we say it is doomed.
The rest of the top 10 for films is quite low with Your Place or Mine dropping to third place and The Woman King dropping to fifth place, which I must say again is a must watch and deserves to be getting more attention then it is, especially with awards.
That’s the top 10 for this week. Did you spend your weekend binging OuterBanks Season 3 and are you excited for season 4?
The Box office report for this past weekend is here and there is a lot to discuss!!!
Starting with the biggest story AntMan and The Wasp Quantumanina suffered the biggest drop in the MCU history. It dropped a massive 69.7% drop in its second weekend earning a total of $32.2 Million at the domestic box office. It didn’t fare much better overseas either as it suffered 64.1% drop bring in just $46.4 million. It’s global total currently sits at $363.7 Million.
The big question is now what happens with Marvel. Well I think we have already seen the affects this has had on the studio. They already delayed The Marvels into November to give them more time to get that film exactly right. They also have delayed several Disney Plus shows to give them more time. For example they are now giving more time to the writers to work on Agatha Coven Of Chaos. I think having to put out so many projects has been Marvels downfall as Kevin Feige can’t be as involved as all of them. However with Bob Iger returning to the company and saying they are going to focus in quantity over quality, fingers crossed the MCU gets back on track.
Now for some more positive box office new, Elizabeth Banks was able to make a comeback with Cocaine Bear. After her Charlie’s Angels film bombed both critically and financially she needed a big win and here one is. It scored a big $23.1 Million at the domestic box office. Expect this film to perform similarly like Megan and don’t be surprised if some form of sequel gets announced as it only cost Universal $35 million to make.
Both Avatar 2 and Puss in Boots 2 are still making money at the box office as well. Avatar 2 has now reached $2.27 Billion and is expected to end its run around $2.3 Billion. Puss In Boots is also now at a strong total of $442.5 million which shows just how strong the word of mouth has been for this film, and clearly shows that there is still a high amount of interest in the Shrek franchise.
That’s the box office for this week. What did you watch and what do you think about the state of the MCU at the moment?
The Nielsen Charts for the week of January 23- 29 are here and there is a lot to discuss.
Ginny and Georgia continue to dominate on this chart just like that have been on Netflix’s own charts. This show has become a juggernaut with its second season. I would expect a renewal any day now, if i had to guess the cast are most likely renegotiations their contracts dude to the popularity of the show.
That 90s show is also doing strong business which explains why it got renewed for a second season. Also this week saw a strong win for Peacock which came in at third place in the originals chart as Poker Face made it in, which has also been renewed for a second season.
The Walking Dead is also doing really strong business on Netflix since its final season was added to the service. With such big numbers it shows why AMC aren’t willing to give it up and it will be interesting to see how all the spinoffs do as well.
The Last of Us also has very strong viewership on HBO Max. It’s important to ember here that this doesn’t take into account the people who watch on HBO, so the fact its so high with just HBO Max viewership just shows how popular it is.
On the film side of things both You People and Shotgun Wedding debited with strong numbers on the charts, which agains shows the power of big stars on streaming movies. You also have the big Disney films which seem to be on the charts every week as both Encanto and Moana are nearly always on this chart.
