Turning Red is Pixar’s most unique film to date. It has a very unique animation style which is more akin to anime compared to the traditional Pixar and Disney animation style. This helps this film feel more different and unique as it visually stands out from other animation pictures in the past.
This is director Domee Shi’s first feature film and based on how well this film was constructed and put together I would say she has a very bright future as a director. The story feels quite personal and tells a real and compelling story about growing up and how that can affect your relationship with your parents. It also highlights the pressure of trying to be this perfect kid, while also wanting to be herself in her own way.
This film is also Pixar’s most edgiest film as it discusses puberty and the struggles teens actually go through while growing up. It’s a true coming of age film for early teens and how quick things can change.
The voice acting is so great in this film. Rosalie Chang does a fantastic job voicing Mei as she can play this strong confident girl but can also play those perfect emotional moments as well. Also as no surprise Sandra Oh does a fantastic job as the mom as well really bring out the emotion of that character.
With this film being on Disney Plus you have no excuse not to sit down and watch this film. It’s so unique and charming, it’s one of Pixar’s best films yet.
